Spider Webs: Music Rather Than Survival Mechanism

Spider Webs: Music Rather Than Survival Mechanism

In honor of Halloween, we thought we’d share this cool story about our eight legged arachnid friends. Spider webs are consisted of threads as tough as nylon, and webs are in fact vibrational tools similar to stringed instruments like guitars. Depending on the length and width of a single string, a different vibrational tone is emitted. Spiders are able to actively sense vibrational changes in their web based on the sensitivity of their legs. Amazingly, spiders have the capability to acutely rearrange the tonal structure of their web design to make sure that it is “in tune” by making strings shorter or longer. Vibrational information is important so that spiders can sense and differentiate between prey like an insect and a potential mate!
