February 14th Demonstration against Horse-Drawn Carriages in Philadelphia

Please join the Pennsylvania Chapter of Friends of Animals in demonstrating against the oppressive horse-drawn carriage industry in Philadelphia this Valentines Day, Sunday, February 14th.

Some people choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day by taking a carriage ride through historic Philadelphia. However, there is nothing romantic about horse-drawn carriages. The most basic interests of these horses (the descendents of horses who centuries ago were taken out of their natural habitat, separated from their communities, and selectively bred for human purposes) are subordinated to human convenience. These horses only receive food, water, rest and interaction with other captive horses when humans permit. This is not romantic, it’s exploitation.

We will be handing out Valentines to potential carriage customers, urging them to find a non-exploitive way in which to celebrate the holiday. We’ll also be handing out candy hearts and urging people to contact Councilmember Frank DiCicco, to send the councilmember a message to end the use of horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia.

WHEN: February 14, 2010 ““ from 2:00 to 5:00PM
WHERE: The NE corner of 5th & Chestnut

Can’t make it to the protest? Please contact Councilmember Frank DiCicco and let the councilmember know that you want to see the end of horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia.
