Advertisers Dump NBC's Exploitative "Shark Hunters" Show

September 04, 2014 | Marine Animals

We have a cheer today as yet another company joins the ever-growing list of advertisers who are pulling their ads from NBC's despicable "Shark Hunters" show.  The show idolizes trophy fishermen who compete to reel in the biggest shark for a $10,000 prize. Among the sharks being targeted is the common extremely vulnerable species we are working to protect by recently petitioning the US government to list them under the Endangered Species Act.

The common thresher, as well as other vulnerable species, are particularly harmed by trophy fishing competitions because their large size attracts fishermen who consider the struggle involved in capturing these sharks to be a vital part of the "sport".

Programs like "Shark Hunters" glamorize shark hunting and killing while overlooking the fact that trophy fishing, commercial fishing and environmental degredation have caused shark populations worldwide to dramatically decrease over the last 50 years and ignore the vital role sharks play in our ocean's ecosystem.

You can sign the petition to have NBC cancel "Shark Hunters" here and can read more about our work to protect exploited marine species right here.

The exploitation of our sea life to support Blood Sport or entertainment is bogus.

cancel shark hunters and be more careful in the future promoting shows of violence and destruction.

Dump this disgusting show. How low can you go, NBC?

Cancel shark hunters!

Stop promoting the murder of animals that should be on the endangered species list!

Cancel Shark Hunters. Shame on you NBC! Disgusting and despicable; programs like this leave me sad and ashamed of humanity, or lack there of.

Please cancel this is horrible!!!

This is an unconscionable and irresponsible program and must be stopped from airing. Very damaging.

Please be responsible and look into the overwhelming amount of these amazing and misunderstood creatures that are being killed for profit. Namely, for their fins. Their numbers are dwindling. Please be a positive force and voice in the world you live in and pull the plug on this programming. Why not a show which helps to educate people on the importance of these amazing creatures? They are not commodities for NBC to make a few dollars. These are living beings who are slowly being destroyed with no outcry from the public. Please NBC! Stop exploiting these animals and taking advantage of those humans who buy into fear-mongering of sharks, thereby condoning these acts of violence and cuelty!
