Take Action for Horses in NYC on December 5th
Press Conference & Rally on Horses Without Carriages International Day
Please join Friends of Animals and the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages on Saturday, December 5th, at 1pm, as we celebrate the International Day of Recognition for Carriage and Cart Horses around the world at a rally and press conference at Central Park. On this day, cities around the world stand in solidarity in our efforts to win freedom for the horses exploited in the carriage horse industry, and your presence is greatly needed for a unified show of support.
Special guests Council Member Tony Avella, Mary Xanthos, DVM and others will speak to the press and renew demands to end the exploitative and dangerous horse-drawn carriage industry in New York City by passing Council Member Avella’s bill that would ban the industry. We’ll be gathering at the pick-up and drop-off location that all the carriage horses use on their route through the park, so all potential customers and those already taking a ride will be sure to see us and become educated about what this “tourist attraction” is all about.
Important information from a recent investigation will be revealed at this press conference, and we hope that you can be there.
Posters will be provided.
· When: Saturday December 5th @ 1:00 PM
· Where: Central Park South 59th St. north/west corner @ 5th Avenue

I was in NYC on Thanksgiving last year. It was chilly out and those poor horses were just dripping with sweat. They will catch pneumonia and die. I protest this behavior to the fullest.

Really?? You want to ban one of the OLDEST ways of our country? Horses have carried us on their backs and have pulled us through the great states in wagons and on carts. If you want to help these animals, make regulations like horse can’t operate more than 10 hours or horse must have blanket when not in use. Not ban the use of horses for cart. Don’t turn our AMERICA that horses pulled our butts through into a sniveling country that doesn’t want to acknowledge what our forefathers have done and what this country was based on.

Really? Giving recreational rides to tourists is a cornerstone of democracy? If you truly want to help horses, end their exploitation.

Looking forward to this event! Horse-drawn drawn carriages do not belong in New York City.

They should be stabled in a modern safe barn within Central Park and only allowed to work inside the park away from city traffic. The horses should also be checked for inhumane treatment. Many of these horses are former harness race horses, if there is an all out ban, some will probably be dumped off at an auction and end up slaughtered.

I attended the demonstration in NYC yesterday. We watched the pathetic sight of miserable horses working in the the freezing rain with no blankets while their “drivers” kept themselves fully covered and protected. Dozens of carriages were driven against the traffic where it merges with 5th Ave and park traffic, while cops watched and did nothing. It was terribly dangerous for the horses. I saw a poor trotter dragging one of the terribly heavy carriages, far too heavy for that size horse to pull. That horse and others arrived back at the queue for the next customers steaming from sweat and exertion and yet had no blanket, likely making the horse ill. When I asked the brutish driver why his horse had no blanket he turned his back and refused to look at me or reply. These creeps care nothing about the horses or the health and safety. Yet, obese, ignorant out-of-towners are taught to believe that this is a “fun” thing to do in NY. I have never seen a more miserable sight than these beautiful horses being exploited for a quick buck.
