Elephant Seal Rescue
This is one of the three elephant seal pups rescued today by Marine Animal Rescue. This young seal has a small, but deep wound around his throat area.
The other seals were very thin, tired and also suffered from some small wounds and lacerations.
All the pups were immediately transported to the care center for medical attention.
MAR conducted 59 marine mammal rescues in April.

God Bless all of you for the loving care that you provide for these innocent creatures. I work with wildlife that are abandoned, etc., and the fullfillment of being able to help them recover, or survive, is where I find my peace.

Where are these pups from and how did they get hurt? Where’s the rest of the story we’re missing?

Thanks for all the concern and your kind comments.
There are elephant seal rookeries located on the islands off the southern California coast. Elephant seal pups in our area are born in January. Weaned in less than one month, the pups that end up on the beaches in LA County are pups that just haven’t figured out life without mom yet. Some of the pups will figure it out on their own, others will need some human assistance. When MAR evaluates the animals we must look for things like injuries, hypothermia, dehydration. We would rather the pups make it on their own. But, if we think they can’t, MAR will be there to help them. After spending time in a rehabilitation center the pups will be released back into the ocean.
