Update: Arctic Refuge Rally on Capitol Hill

September 21, 2005 | Take Action

As a congressional vote on whether to allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge nears, Friends of Animals joined activists from across the nation at a Washington, D.C. rally on the Capitol lawn 20 September. The theme of the rally was "Don't drill, storm Capitol Hill."

Activists heeded the call, going en masse to the halls of Capitol Hill to tell lawmakers that we will never be able to drill our way to energy independence, and that we must protect the coastal plain in its natural state.

The Refuge provides a home for more than 200 species of birds and other animals including Tundra swans, caribou, polar bears, grizzly bears and wolves. In the next couple of months, Congress will vote on whether to open the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge to oil exploration and drilling.

The coastal plain is void of the damage, and obtrusiveness of steel oil pipelines, gravel roads, exploration equipment, drilling rigs, processing stations, air strips and contamination from spills which exist in nearby Prudhoe Bay. This unique wilderness exists almost nowhere else.

The lineup of speakers who championed protection for the refuge included environmental attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Senators John Kerry (D-MA), Lincoln Chafee(R-RI), Joseph Lieberman, (D-CT), Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) and Representative Edward Markey (D-MA). A call was issued to Congress to decrease our dependence on oil by exploring alternate energy sources, conserving and raising fuel efficiency standards.

After the rally, activists headed up the steps of the Capitol to lobby their congressional representatives about the upcoming vote. Please join us in this lobby effort; act now to save this pristine land and the animals that call this refuge home. Tell your Senators and Representative to oppose all efforts to open the refuge to drilling.

I was in rally between 11:15 am to 2:00 pm.on 09/20/05. I strongly support anti-Arctic Refuge Drilling. In this public land 95% was granted for oil company to drill, please save this parcel of animal breeding ground and Alaska Indian livelyhood animal food for their survival. Please summarized all the speakers notes and pictures in the web sites. I checked all the News Media (TV and News Papers) in Washington DC and the New York Times, none of them reports this rally activity. No money, no vote, no report, this is so called Democratic Society in USA.

I feel that its time to take action . We need to stop using all the artic refuge land and let the animals keep it . If we keep on doing what we are doing there will be no more wild life or open land. And soon it will be the end of mankind as we know it. It is very important to save the animals and their habitate's. For the next generation to enjoy.

Please don't drill in the Artic if the % of crude is so little and the damage to the eco balance is so much greater. Animals should have the right to their environments. We are not the only ones on this planet!! Thanks.

As A Young Voice I think that we should not drill in the Arctic. We need to think of what damage this would cause for our environment. Right now the gas prices are extremely high. This might make some people think that if we drill in our own country it would lower the gas prices, but in reality the amount of oil we'd get would not help the gas prices. Are we really ready to risk ruining one of our greatest animal habitats? Is it really worth it?
