A bill that has reached the Nevada State Senate seeks to re-define the word "wildlife," stripping protections for wild horses and burros, and eliminating any mandate that allows them... water.

Merriam-Webster defines wildlife as follows: living things and especially mammals, birds, and fishes that are neither human nor domesticated.

But Nevada lawmakers have introduced AB 329, which seeks to exclude wild horses and burros from that definition in the context of water resources:

As used in this title, unless the context otherwise requires, "wildlife" means any wild mammal, wild bird, fish, reptile, amphibian, mollusk or crustacean found naturally in a wild state, whether indigenous to Nevada or not and whether raised in captivity or not. The term does not include any wild horse or burro.

The livestock industry would have you believe that there are "too many" wild horses. The fact is, cattle ranches usurp land and water to support more than twenty times as many cattle as there are wild horses.1

Nevada has employed some despicable techniques to get rid of wild horses and protect the profits of cattle ranching. Wild horses have been fenced out of water sources, rounded up via helicopter, killed, and sterilized. The new plan will allow ranchers to legally "thirst" the horses out.

It's time for this self-serving nonsense to stop. Please contact the following office holders and tell them that wild horses and burros must not be excluded from any protections afforded to wildlife. Tell your legislators to oppose AB 329:

1- Estimate of head of cattle in NV vs. estimate of number of wild horses

We all KNOW this whole "water business FARCE" is being spear-headed by the sleaziest of sleaze groups, the free-loading SOB's known to all as THE WELFARE CATTLE RANCHERS!. What they can't SUCK out of the honest, hard-working tax paying Americans, they will search for other ways to get rid of whatever they may have to share resources with. They want the horses gone so they can STEAL their RIGHTFUL LAND, and move in more cattle. And Old man Harry Reid is just as much behind this as those lowly welfare ranchers. It is really a sad disappointing time for America when we allow individuals to decide who gets to drink of "the Staff of Life." I cannot even begin to tell you how disgusted I am with Nevada. And if this JUDAS law passes, I guarantee you, that'll be the end of Nevada.

GRAB A BRAIN NEVADA!!!! Horses and burros are wild and alive; so they are wildlife!!!! they need protection, and they have a right to live and be FREE!!!! What have you got against freedom!!!! Make an amendment to protect these animals as WILDLIFE NOW!!!

As horses and burros are wildlife, make an amendment to protect ALL wildlife NOW NEVADA!!!!! The whole world is watching to see if you are capable of stepping up to the plate!!!!

Let the poor horses drink----how would you like to die of dehydration---animals and horses are people too.

The very thought that Nevada would consider that horses and burros are NOT wildlife it OUTRAGEOUS!! I have a 'thought' myself. Lets try this ... All Nevada Senators and Cattle Ranchers, be taken out to the desert.... NO WATER...NO SHADE .... and kept from ANY access to the water or shade, for... lets say 3 days!!! Let them see what they are doing, or trying to do to the wild horses and burros. I would think that the water would 'belong' to the wildlife that 'lives in the area', and NOT to the cattle that were 'brought to the area.'

Horses and burros are wildlife and all wildlife should be protected from a few greedy individuals who only think of their own profit. How cruel to not allow horses and burrows water. Make an amendment to protect all wildlife Nevada. Those who care are watching.

not giving water to a animal is considered animal cruelty. money always wins over animal and human life. you sad busta** should be ashamed of yourselves

OK... Call these guys and let them know you will be sending $$ and supporting anyone running AGAINST them in the next election, they are self serving, that may be the only way to get their attention...

This is absurd and has been since the issue first was drafted. The rain falls on public lands (mostly) and then runs to wherever Nevada thinks they own it. I say all water that has fallen on public lands be held for use by ONLY wild animals. Nevada can ONLY use the water that has specifically fallen on Nevada land. Fools are in charge people.

The Wild Mustang Are Beautiful, Creatures And Just As Deserving Of Life, Freedom, And Respect, As Any Other Wild Creature Out There!!! They Don't Deserve The Kind Of Brutal Treatment By The BLM, That They Are Recieving!!! Let Them Have Their Life, Freedom, And Water, And Let Them Live In Peace!!!!!
