Wolf Bill UPDATE

April 14, 2011 | Take Action / Hunting & Wildlife Management / Wolves / Free-Living Animals

The budget bill passed the Senate with a bipartisan vote of 81-19 on April 14, 2011, and now awaits President Obama's signature. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., who sponsored the measure alongside Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, said at a press conference on Thursday afternoon, ""¦I can tell you that even though there are some people out there who don't think you have to manage wildlife species, you do." In reality, the only species on earth that is in need of management is our own. The passing of this bill could mean a wolf hunt as early as this fall-because management of wolves could return to Montana and Idaho in as little as thirty days, according to FWP Attorney Bob Lane. Wolves were once common in the West, thriving nearly everywhere; today it's estimated that there are only about 1700 left in the West.

I have lived in Alaska all my adult life and fly extensively in the bush. I have seen what wolves can do when numbers get to big for an area, i have also seen this in areas with over hunting by man. Wolves have reached and surpassed the initial numbers wanted to achieve the goals that were set for a healthy population by experts in this field. Let's do what we have to do to manage the number of wolves as well as hunters to try to achieve a balance for all. None of us want so many deer & elk that they die of starvation or disease nor do we want to see nothing but wolves that have nothing to eat forcing them to turn on livestock and pets to survive. I realize both sides will never agree on this but hopefully we can find a balance here too. Luckily wolf numbers are very healthy in AK & Canada that if these goal numbers drop we can give you more to maintain the numbers the experts think you need. FoA comments: You keep mentioning experts. Are these the same or similar experts who built the nuclear reactors in Japan, the exploding oil rig in the Gulf, collapsing coal mines in Kentucky, and the Titanic? They sure have been busy. And now you want them to restore the balance of nature? A balance previously upset by earlier experts? Let's give them the day off and think for ourselves.

I just came across this site and thought it a good place to reach out to more people who are in favor of supporting wolves. I have written a petition and posted it on the Care 2 web page and was wondering if I could post that link here to gain more support. I will be sending the petition to our elected officials to show how many people are upset over the rider on the budget bill. Thanks for being a voice for wildlife and providing a place where people can come together to support our natural environment.

I would hope that the Governors of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming would receive our message that we adamantly support an economic boycott of their states and that this manipulation by the Cattlemen's interest via our representatives in Washington, will not be tolerated. Senator Jon Tester and Rep. Mike Simpson should be ashamed of themselves; I am. Their pretense that this is "managing a species" is the oldest trick in the book.
