Rise of the Texatarian
“ If you’re a little nervous at first, let us hold your hand through it. We promise you’ll be a Texatarian in no time. ”
~ Becca Strong and Zoja Ulesoo
Austin is not only the capital of Texas; it’s the undisputed capital of music, education and veganism in Texas , a state encompassing 268,820 square miles, and a population of 24.7 million people. According to the July-August issue of VegNews, there are seven vegan eateries in this university city. It sorta makes sense, doesn’t it? I mean, humans who understand the intricacies of music, philosophy, medicine, and environmental science would be much more likely to become vegans, would they not? Now, having celebrated the grand opening of Iggi’s Texatarian food trailer on July 31, Austin has eight fully vegan venues.
Our new venue derives its name from a pit bull mix I’ve known since puppyhood (Iggy), who is also one of my favorite guests. Iggy’s human companions, Becca Strong and Zoja Ulesoo, who have a love for greasy vegan food, teamed up to create a food cart like none other. Each contributes a unique personality and proven skills to the business. Becca’s the creative chef; Zoja’s the daring marketing expert.
Iggi’s is a one-of-a-kind fast-food joint that pulls off a blend of traditional Texas culture and a progressive diet. Most people are a little wary of the word “vegan" and assume it means healthy, raw, organic, or worst of all: flavorless. Iggi’s challenges common misperceptions by catering to those who are a little, well... terrified. The menu features chili cheeze dogs, frito pie, mac’n' cheeze, cole slaw, potato salad, and everything that reminds one of Texas. Iggi's menu is simple, familiar, and delicious. There's nothing scary about vegan food with a Southern twist!
Everything that Iggi’s serves is vegan, and many offerings are gluten-free. Becca and Zoja care about their customers. After all, that’s part of their ethical position. So if you happen to be in this neck of the woods, y’all, come on down to Iggi’s. You’ll be given a hearty Texas welcome!
